Hear While I Cry

Baby, baby, baby, baby, babe
I know you, yes I do
Darlin', darlin', darlin', darlin', darlin'
I know what you do
When you step out at night
And leave me here to fight those blues

Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me
Has love gone so wrong?
After, after, after, after, after
We've been two for so long
That I can't think as one
And still you have to run me down

Oh no - why
Do you - do me in
Down so - hear while I cry

Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby
Can it be that I
Have to, have to, have to, have to, have to
Spend my nights in lonesome crying
When you step out at night
And leave me here to fight those blues

Oh no - why
Do you - do me in
Down so - hear while I cry
Cry

F/68 - Eastman Circle

Richard Griggs

I wrote this during the hiatus between the 1968 breakup of Ill Wind and our reforming in 1970. Unlike most of my songs, which were written with my own voice in mind, this was specifically penned for Conny on the off-chance that we'd work together again. My recollection is that we first worked this up when Larry Carsman joined the band.

The song has no particular depth, personal references, or hidden meanings. It's just a rock song on one of the principal themes (spousal abuse) with some Aretha influence (the repeating bits) and a bit of a Slavic flavor. There are a few odd turns of phrase, mostly attempts to break out of clichéed lyrical patterns.
